THE FIVE TENETS OF TAEKWONDO TRAINING:

Respect  (Treating others the way you would want to be treated/feeling of honor and esteem)

Honesty  (Gaining trust from truthfullness)

Humility  (Humble/to not brag or boast about oneself)

Perseverance  (To keep trying/finish what you begin)

Self Control  (Think before you act/remaining calm/keeping emotions in check)

Other Terms:

Self Discipline:  Doing something on one's own (ie. kids: without being asked or told).

Dignity:  Respect for oneself.

Courtesy:  Respect for others.

Integrity:  Doing what one thinks is right/doing what one says they will do.

STUDENT CREED

I will develop myself in a positive manner, and avoid anything that could reduce my mental growth or physical health.

I will develop self discipline in order to bring out the best in myself and others.

I will use common sense before self defense, and never be abusive or offensive.

FIVE CODES OF HUMAN CONDUCT

(established by the Buddhist scholar Wonkang):

Be loyal to your country
Be obedient to your parents
Be trustworthy to your friends
Never retreat in battle
Never make an unjust kill

11 COMMANDMENTS OF MODERN TAEKWONDO

(as reflected in the 5 Codes of Human Conduct):

Loyalty to your country
Respect your parents
Faithfulness to your spouse
Respect your brothers and sisters
Loyalty to your friends
Respect your elders
Respect your teachers
Never take life unjustly
Indomitable spirit
Loyalty to your school
Finish what you begin

Olympic style sparring is a martial sport aspect our students learn to develop a proficiency in.  It's fun, good aerobic exercise, and can enhance a student's mental and physical development and self defense skills.  Although not required, students are welcome and encouraged to practice this game outside of our school at regularly announced tournaments.  However, our overall focus is on looking inward and finding answers from within ourselves, rather then competition with others for medals or Belts.

We are always attempting to help everyone to better understand the ideals and philosophy of Taekwondo and of our Academy.   We are a Black belt school primarily in our dedication to strive for Black belt excellence in achieving one's full potential as a contributing member of society, and a feeling of happiness and fulfillment in the appreciation of all that life has to offer.

For us, this is the equivalent of success.

"...Martial Arts means honestly expressing yourself." --Bruce Lee
